Paros Island

Paros the 3rd largest island in the heart of the Cycladic Complex, in the middle of the Aegean sea, has an area 196 sq. km and 120 km of coastline.
Its name comes from Paros, the leader of Arcades, who were the first colonists of the island in 1100 B.C. However, the first inhabitants came from the Minoan Kingdom of Crete thus its original name was “Minoa”.
Paros offers good transportation services by ferries and speedboats to Piraeus, Rafina, Crete and all Cycladic islands, as well as by plane to Athens and Thessaloniki.
Its climate is uniquely temperate and during the summer months the temperature does not exceed mid 30s Celsius. The summer morning wind makes all water sports highly attractive.

The capital of Paros is charming Paroikia, the second town is Naoussa, a cosmopolitan fishing village with one of the most picturesque ports in Aegean, and thirdly is magical Lefkes, a mountainous village, all built accordingly to the typical Cycladic style, with white houses, arches, windmills, alleys and traditional chapels.
The beaches of Paros have bluish crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches; most popular are Kolymbithres, Santa Maria, Parasporos, Aghia Irini, Marcelo, Farangas and the ideal for water sports is Pounta (opposite to Antiparos), Chryssi Akti, Monastiri.
Among the sight-seeings of Paros is the church of Ekatontapyliani, an ante-christian monument, the Archaelogical museum in Paroikia, the Frankish castle in Paroikia, the Venician castle in Naoussa, the Butterflies valley.

By sea
Ferries and Highspeed catamaran services run daily from Piraeus, Rafina, Cyclades and Heraklion – Crete island. The schedules are particularly frequent during the summer months. The prices of tickets depend on the type of ship that you will select. With ferry boat that departs from Piraeus, the ticket is cheaper and the travel lasts 5 hours, while with “highspeed” boats, that leave from Piraeus, the ticket is more expensive and the travel lasts 3 hours.

Most frequent lines are Pireaus (2h 55m – 5h), Rafina – which is near the Athens airport (2h 35min – 4h 50m ), Thira/Santorini ( 1h 45m – 3h 15m), Mykonos (35m – 1h 20m), Syros (1h 05m) and Naxos (25m – 50m)

There are also frequent boat connections with other Cycladic Islands: Andros, Siros, Tinos, Mikonos, Sifnos, Naxos, Ios, Amorgos and Santorini, some of the Dodecanese Islands and Crete.

By airplane
Alternatively you can arrive at Paros by airplane. The airport of Paros is located 9 kilometers away from the capital of the island, Parikia, near the village Aliki. The distance is roughly 20 minutes and you can go there by taxi or by bus.

The flights from Athens airport Eleftherios Venizelos are very frequent and their duration is 45 minutes. Also, you can fly to Santorini or Mykonos which are the nearest international airports and then catch the boat or the speed boat.
